I would say that possibly the biggest downside of the GBA version, if it came down to it, is that the simultaneous multiplayer battle mode is missing (i.e. But you would do fine to just get the GBA version if you want a perfectly competent version of the game with the really cool and otherwise prohibitively difficult to acquire e-Reader levels included. Ideally? If it were me? Play the main game on the NES version (graphics have a charming live theater conceit lost in the remakes and the music is equally charming and probably moreso than the remakes, and less fuzzy/staticky than the GBA renditions) and play SMA4 for the extra levels if you both get really into it.
